Chap Goh Meh & Fireworks Celebration 2012

This coming 6th of February, join us for a unique, multicultural Chap Goh Meh celebration at Padang Esplanade from 6pm to 11.pm.

Various performances will await visitors including Chingay and Lion Dance, Multi – Cultural Dance, Special Guest Star Lau Han Jie and a rare Lion Dance On Stilts performance. Penang’s special hawker food will be sold starting from 6.00pm onwards. The highlight of the evening is of course, the tradition of throwing of oranges into the sea.

The throwing of oranges into the sea is an important part of Penang ’s Chap Goh Meh cultural heritage. Traditionally, unmarried women would toss tangerines into the sea. While doing so, hopeful unmarried men would try their luck at catching these tangerines in order to meet their future spouse. Our Guest of Honour Chief Minister of Penang , Yang Amat Berhormat Tuan Lim Guan Eng, will have the honour of throwing the first orange into the sea.

Chinese New Year Cultural & Heritage Celebration 2012

This celebration is to showcase the richness of the living heritage in Penang, in line with Penang status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There will be treasure hunt and Chinese New Year cooking demonstrations and lots of wonderful and interesting events during the night.

Kek Lok Si Temple - Display of Lights

Noted as No. 4 best place to visit by VisitPenang website readers, during Chinese New Year, Temple of Supreme Bliss will be the focal point of festival for the Chinese community in Penang.

During the Chinese New Year celebration, thousands of devotees turned up for the annual lighting ceremony at Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam.

Starting from Chinese New Year, Kek Lok Si Temple will be light up every night at 7pm until midnight to symbolize peace, luck and prosperity.

Approximately 230,000 light bulbs and 10,000 lanterns light up the temple every night in conjunction with Chinese New Year. Making this emple one of Asia's most beautiful temple. The most oustanding scene is the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas, it is over 35 metres in height and is reputed to be one of the largest pagodas in Malaysia. The glittering pagoda can be seen from from several kilometres away.

Penang World Music Festival

Venue: Botanic Gardens, Penang

For three consecutive days, Penang will flicker and pulsate to a different kind of rhythm. Nestled in the serene Quarry Garden situated just left of the entrance to the famous Botanic Gardens and amidst lush trees and tropical foliage, the 3rd Penang World Music Festival 2012 will be held. The festival will feature world renowned musicians from Malaysia as well as from overseas who will gather and participate in "a convergence of harmonic fusion".

From 30th March to 1st April 2012, the Penang World Music Festival organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and further supported by KDU, Virtual Malaysia and Hard Rock Hotel (The Official Hotel) promises to enthrall and entertain thousands with top world music performances. This time, the event is expected to attract a bigger crowd as world music enthusiasts, international, regional and local, throng to the Botanic Gardens in 2012.
